  • Lysine is an α-amino acid and a precursor to many proteins. It contains an α-amine group (which is charged +NH₃ when lysine is dissolved in water at physiological pH), an α-carboxylic group (which is deprotonated COO⁻ under the same conditions), and a side chain (CH₂)₄NH₂ (which is partially ionized when dissolved in water at physiological pH). Therefore, lysine is classified as a basic, charged (in water at physiological pH), and aliphatic amino acid.

  • lysine was first isolated in 1889 by the German biochemist Ferdinand Heinrich Edmund Dreschel through the hydrolysis of the protein casein. He named it lysin, derived from the Greek word lys (lysis), meaning "to break down" or "to unravel."
  • In 1902, German scientists Emil Fischer and Fritz Wegert successfully determined the chemical structure of lysine by synthesizing it in the laboratory.
